at night in bed they unwrap one another
like gifts from a greater force
crumpled colored wrapping paper on the floor
that once concealed their pasts

they learn of families and friends
of former loves and childhoods
climbing hills in the dawn
to see the towns and plains on the other side

they talk one another to sleep
laughing when they realize it's light outside
comfortable in one another's arms
temporarily happy to be alive
and fine with the prospect of sleep
