Under Stars

You can't seem to get it into your head-
Frozen with awe
Or love
Or something I can't even name
(Not that I expect to)
You stare wordlessly into the sky.
And my entreaties
My lectures
My harassing harangues on life and meaning and love
(A thing I can't define though I feel sure I know it better than
you)
Disappear into the air
Less substantial than the starlight.
The stars don't love you back.
And for all their seeming constancy they are more unfaithful than I've
ever been
Without a word
They disappear years before you even notice.
But your eyes are filled with starstuff-
Shining glimmering feverish-
And all I can hope for is a more understanding moon.
