TWO PHOTOGRAPHS

the first is not too clear
it's me with a baby
tired and flushed
but you can't see the tears

twenty one years on
from that hard January morning
when I held him close
six pounds of heartache

the second photograph
it's clear enough
me and my son in a bar
drunk, well merry anyhow
two pints raised
to his health and happiness

he looks happy enough
under the gloss of the picture
but it's not clear
after all
he only lends me scraps of his life
the bits he wants me to feed off

his arm is around me
in this picture
and for a split second
I think he gripped me tight
When the flash went off
