The letter

You say you got there safely
and the hotel's really clean.
You start at eight on Monday,
but you don't say what you mean,
'cos you don't say that you miss me
and you don't ask if I'm fine
and it feels as if I'm losing you
when I'm reading between the lines
You say the weather's brilliant
and the people there are kind,
but the words seem sort of distant-
-as if something's on your mind.
But you don't say when you're coming home
and you never ring at nine.
It's as if there's something you just can't say,
when I'm reading between the lines.
You say it's because you're busy,
you're working half the night.
You say that you're doing it all for us-
-and one day it will turn out right.
But you don't say that you love me,
or that one day you'll be mine,
and I know that I'll never see you again,
'cos I read it between the lines.
