A Dark Walk

Another casual lie sent me stumbling down a pitch black alleyway,
Banked by Georgian houses, rising high on both sides,
All around me lost in a still, motionless sea of darkness,
My only company the echo of my plodding footsteps, so full of
woe.
My eyes growing gradually accustomed to the pitch black.
I see the faint outline of a row of steadfast doors,
So heavy, so plain, so firmly shut,
Every so often
a light appears,
square illumination from high above,
A brief glimpse of a ghost like figure,
And then
with nothing more than a dismissive glance the curtains slammed shut.
Surrounded by street lights, robbed of their light by a power
cut,
All those years of progress invalidated,
Plunged back into the dark ages,
I with no
explanation of how all the lights went out.
