One Sunny Day…
Where the blood of freedom once soaked a bounded earth
A blue flower has grown at the foot of a wooden cross.
It’s a sunny day. Under a name is etched an epitaph –
His vain heroism will always be remembered.
A bastard boy, born of lost humanity, whispers - Daddy.
The widowed mother squeezes his warm tiny hand.
She represses her rage at the painful memories.
They were ten soldiers, maybe twelve pinning her down
While her dying hero was held up and made to watch.
With two little fingers, the boy plucks the flower,
Look Mama, it’s happy blue. What’s it called?
She gives him this half-truth. It was named after
The last I saw in your Daddy’s eyes – forget-me-not.
