Liberated Criminal

Lights off
Shades down
Darkness sets in.
Clouds of dust from the pillows choke her
But she settles into the billowing sheets
A raindrop falling and
Hitting the waters surface.
Tendrils of ebony hair span the bed
But barely enough time to turn her head
As he raises his weapon like a wizards wand
Hitting the vulnerable flesh.
Lights on
Shades up
Rays of sun filter through.
Fluorescent yellow are the beams of police tape
Surrounding the victims bed as
The blood soaked sheets of the night before
Tell their gruesome tale.
He escapes into the blinding daylight, no
Remorse for the crime he has committed or
The life he has ended.
The criminal creeps through the membrane
Of our penetrable society, living on the same
Knife's edge that keeps him awake.
He slips through the nights and the days
Endlessly ignored and unnoticed
Safe from the steely bars of jail
Yet savaged by the liberty of his insanity.
