And they asked, 'What is the good like?'
And he said, 'The good is like the stout mast of a ship. When the wind
blows up and the sea strikes the bows, you must hold onto it as tight
as you can. When the wind blows up and the sea strikes the bows, many
men let go of the mast and they are lost in the waves. Though they call
out to you, telling you to let go of the mast, do not do so. Never let
go of the mast, or you will be lost as they are. Though they tell you
that the mast and the sea are the same, or that the mast does not
exist, do not believe them, but cling all the more tightly to the mast,
lest you be lost. Though you grow tired and the mast becomes wearisome
to hold, do not let go of the mast. For how else will you cross the
great, wide sea to the undiscovered country if you have no ship to
travel in, no mast to carry the sail that holds the wind?'
And they asked, 'How will we know the good?'
And he said, 'The good is like a light in the heart. Though men strike
at it, it will not go out unless you let it. And so you must tend to
the light with all of your life. For the light is your life. And the
good is a beacon. It is a beacon of the heart. And though you strike at
the good in me, the light in my heart will not go out. And it will
always be a beacon for you, guiding you home. For, in truth I tell you,
I will always be the beacon that guides you home.'
