We might have become lovers
Had not our aeroplanes
Windowless, with our pilots dead
Crashed on paths,
Crossed in a war,
Mindless and uncomprehended
As Love.
Or as gazelles caught in a hot stampede
Of love
We might have become lovers
Had you not been the lion
And I, too christian
As the hunter,
Burning from the thirsty sun
Of love.
Had our ships not sunk,
We might have become lovers
I hated water
But you were too fond of swimming
In oceans
Quite different from the one
Of love.
Had I been different
And you, not indifferent
And had the world been different
We might have become lovers.
