WHEN I WAS A KID.

Things I remember when I was a kid...
like ten-bob notes and the faithful old quid.
Duffel coats worn by boys and girls,
sweet cigarettes and licorice whirls.
Marbles, yo-yos, comics as well,
Robin Hood on tele', or William Tell.
Trams and buses, chuffing steam trains,
dandelion clocks and daisy chains.
Tomato soup with bread to start,
bangers and mash and treacle tart.
Roly-poly and steamed plum duff ...
school dinners? - now they were rough!
Tune in to the Goons on the radio set,
tin bath in the lounge - the carpet's all wet.
Medicals at school, and nit nurses too,
verrucas and warts and head lice shampoo.
Park Drives that came in packets of five,
Dance Halls, rock and roll - and all that jive.
Outside lavvy on a cold winter's night,
there is no electric - light the candle for light.
Go to the fish-shop for a few pence worth of chips...
remember blue packets of salt in the crisps?
Tanners and ha'pennies and thruppeny bits,
Meccano and train sets and Airfix kits.
Triumphs and Nortons, B.S.A's as well,
I had a pushbike .... with a broken bell!
Those years have passed by, and I wish they never did....
But I do remember when I was a kid!
