A LIVING MUMMY
Wrapped like a child in a swaddling cloth
It lay on linen white
A mummy in every way but alive
It lay as crucified
Without the sight or sound of love
It lay inert
Unseen beneath it suit of gauze
It lay entombed
A tube from the gash of an unseen mouth
It lay and breathed
And the blinking light was the only life as
It lay to show
That a heart still beat inside the shell
It lay inside
We waited watched and wondered why
It lay and lived
So small and young and yet so strong
It lay and clung to life
Then I heard the doctor wisper
'The little basted just wont die.'
