INT. BEACH HOUSE - DAY
PAINTING STUDIO
We see a beach. The camera zooms out until we spot DAVID
painting a landscape of the beach. LINDSAY enters.
LINDSAY
Your breakfast is on the table,
dear.
DAVID
Yeah I'll be out in a second.
LINDSAY
That's beautiful, dear.
DAVID chuckles.
DAVID
Thanks.
MATCH CUT:
KITCHEN
DAVID is sitting at the table along with his two children,
SARA and SETH. SARA and SETH are eating cereal while DAVID
is reading a newspaper.
LINDSAY is preparing lunches.
DAVID
So you kids off to school or what?
SETH
Yes.
DAVID
You gonna have a good day?
SETH
School is boring.
DAVID
Yeah, I know. You gotta do it
though, son. You have to school.
SETH hides a smile.
SETH
Alright.
DAVID and LINDSAY slightly smile.
SARA
But you never went to school, dad.
DAVID and LINDSAY's smiles disappear.
DAVID
What?
SARA
You dropped out.
DAVID looks at LINDSAY. He turns his head back to SARA.
DAVID
Sara, where did you hear that?
SARA slouches down.
DAVID
Sara, tell me.
MATCH CUT:
EXT. FRONT PORCH
DAVID is sitting on the front porch smoking a cigarette.
SETH appears walking around the corner of the house. DAVID
tosses the cigarette beside the porch.
DAVID
Hey, Seth. Go get your sister.
SETH
Why?
DAVID
I just wanna talk to you guys,
just, get your sister.
SETH
Are you mad?
DAVID
No, not at all! I'm not mad. Just
get your sister. Just a quick talk!
SETH
Okay!
SETH runs back.
CUT TO:
SETH and SARA are sitting on each side of DAVID on the
porch.
DAVID
Alright. Yes, I did drop out of
school. I was very young, and very
upset. You see, you might not
understand what I'm about to tell
you. But what I wanted to do in my
life was much different than what I
was learning in school. But, I was
wrong. You have to do well in
school in order to be successful.
That's just the way it is.
SARA
But how come you're... sugs-
SARA has a hard time spelling "successful".
DAVID
Successful. Yes, dear. I'm
successful because my family loved
me very much, and they helped me
throughout my life. And they still
do. While I was learning how to
paint, they took care of me. And
I'll always take care of you guys,
but you have to do well in school.
Okay?

INT. PAINTING STUDIO - DAY
MARK enters the painting studio. He takes a deep breath and
gets his tools out. He puts them on a table then looks at
the door. He locks the door, grabs his tools and gets
painting. He notices a black smudge on the canvas. He glares
at it. LINDSAY knocks on the door.
LINDSAY
David?
DAVID
Yeah?
LINDSAY
Can you unlock the door please?
DAVID
Just one second.
LINDSAY
Not just one second, open the door
now!
DAVID turns around and unlocks the door. LINDSAY walks in
and locks it again.
LINDSAY (CONT'D)
Why was the fucking door locked?
DAVID
What is wrong with you?
LINDSAY
I heard you talk with our children
about how you flunked school and
mooched off your parents for your
whole life. Yeah, that's real smart
David.
DAVID
So what, you think they're going to
be just like me? Everything worked
out Lindsay, just drop it.
LINDSAY
David. My children are not going to
be fucking losers like you were.
LINDSAY storms out and slams the door. DAVID takes a bottle
of red paint and slams it on the floor. Paint splatters on
the floor and walls. DAVID glances at the black smudge
quickly and exits the room.

INT. PAINTING STUDIO - DAY
DAVID is asleep on the floor beside the frame of his canvas.
There is paint dripping onto the floor beside him. DAVID
wakes up very slowly. He cringes in pain and holds his back.
He notices the paint, looks up and sees a bottle of paint
tilted on the edge of the canvas frame. We hear a knocking
and LINDSAY's voice outside the door.
LINDSAY
David? Are you in there?
DAVID
Yes.
LINDSAY opens the door and walks in.
LINDSAY
Listen, I wanna- what are you
doing?
DAVID gets up.
DAVID
Why were you guys awake last night?
LINDSAY
What?
DAVID
In there, you and the kids!
LINDSAY
David. Nobody was awake.
Pause.
LINDSAY
Listen, David. I'm sorry about what
I said. It's just- there's no way
I'm letting the kids go through
what you did.
DAVID is confused. He speaks softly.
DAVID
Okay.

SETH
Okay mom!
The kids eat while the parents drink coffee and look at each
other awkwardly.
SETH (CONT'D)
Hey, dad. Can me and Sara go for a
walk?
DAVID cracks a smile.
DAVID
Absolutely. After breakfast?
SETH
Yeah.
SARA
My friend at school said there was
a treasure buried at the beach.
DAVID
Just let me get the shovel for you
guys before you leave.
LINDSAY
Are you going with them?
DAVID
They'll be fine on their own. I
gotta finish something, anyways.
LINDSAY gives DAVID a deathly stare.
DAVID
What?!
Everyone stares. DAVID calms himself down, then takes a sip
of coffee.
SETH
Why are you and mom sitting away
from each other?
Silence. DAVID leaves and goes into the...

the open sea around him.
LINDSAY appears. They sit facing each other.
LINDSAY
I'm been unhappy, for so long,
David.
DAVID
Okay. Thanks for telling me, at
least.
LINDSAY
You're not enough for me. You're
not enough for the kids.
DAVID can barely handle it. He starts to choke up.
DAVID
I'm a good dad. Okay? I may not
have ever had a job, or went to
college, but I'm their father. And
I am good at that.
LINDSAY
No you are not, David. They look up
to you. And if they keep doing
that, they're going to be failures
like you were. Like you are.
DAVID
This isn't fair. You can't do this
to me.
LINDSAY
I want a divorce David, and I'm-
DAVID
No no no, you can't do this to me!
This isn't fair!
LINDSAY
David I want a divorce.
DAVID
You're evil. You're evil. Jesus.
You're going to destroy their
fucking lives.
DAVID chokes up badly. His head is in his arms. He looks up.
LINDSAY is walking backwards towards the ocean very slowly.
LINDSAY
We're getting divorced. I'm taking
the kids with me. They'll be
beautiful, successful.
DAVID
You're going to destroy their
lives.
LINDSAY
Beautiful, successful.
LINDSAY walks into the ocean. DAVID stands up. She
eventually gets deep enough that she's invisible.
