Good Friday

The church is darkened
Low watt bulbs and candles
Struggle to give light
On a stormy black day
The people are soaked
The smells of damp raincoats
And incense pervade the church
As the priest intones in droning Latin and Greek

Agnus Dei
Ora Pro Nobis
Blessed be the Lamb Of God
Twenty minutes gone
The wee boy is bored
And stares at the big folk praying
Solemnly
The rain drips down his neck
Down his warm back
And collects in puddles at his feet
All his pals were Proddies
They were spared all this ritual
