Elise sat kneeled on the floor of her mother's room. She pulled out
a box that was crammed amongst books on the shelf facing her. The box
opened and its contents scattered onto the marble floor. Elise quickly
tried to push everything together. She glanced at one of the letters
and began to read-
London
8 November 1900
My Darling,
I was delighted to receive your last letter. So much has occured since
then but nothing of great importance to you. I must tell you how much I
long to be in your company again. I had spent a marvellous time with
you in Paris.
Elise paused and tried to remember when her parents were in Paris...but
she could not. She read on.
You are constantly in my mind. More so than my wife, Anne. I remember
the evening when we dined at that small Italian restaurant off of
Champs Elysee. We laughed; at the table, whilst dancing, when we held
hands on the way to the hotel and when we talked of the plays we'd
seen. Thank you for that night.
I must end my letter here as my sister awaits me.
My thoughts will remain idle until I receive your letter.
With all my love,
Anthony
Elise dropped the letter and stared at the letters surrounding her. All
the letters from some man named Anthony to her mother.
She picked up another of an earlier date and began to read.
