I don't know why I'm here. Why are you here? Yes, I was ten when the
War began. I was at home and the boradcast came in; " Druga Wojna
Swiatowa sie zaczela". Don't you speak Polish? It said that World War
Two had begun. Where was I? Do I remember? Of course! That day I will
never forget. I was at home, eating breakfast with my family. When the
radio announced details of Germany's advance into Warsaw we stopped
eating and sat quietly, frozen. We didn't know what to do!My father
rose from the table and looked at my mother. He told her in Polish to
take us from the kitchen. Yes, I have one brother who is three years
older than I. I don't know where he is now. Nor do I know where my
parents are. Do you remember that day? Do you know where we are now?
The name? I remember soldiers coming to our door and taking my father
away. I don't know why! how old are you? Fine. Oh God, and my mothers
face, when they led my father out. It was as if she knew why he was
going and yet her eyes filled with tears and her mout was locked with
anger. I didn't go up to her. I did want to but felt I shouldn't have.
After that? My mother said she was going to the church to pray for
father and my borther went to my grandmothers house. I never saw either
of them again. I cried for two days. I don't know where they are. ON my
way to find my uncle, I heard that my father died in Katyn. My God,
don't you know Katyn? Haven't you heard about it? Katyn was where the
greatest number of polish soldiers were shot in the head during the
Warsaw uprising. I guess your father may have died there too. Some
people said that they saw him alive after but I gave up hope. The war
had begun and I was too young to know or understand Poland. I didn't
know what war was, why it begun or how it could end. All I knew was
that it carried on for several years after I arrived here. Will we die?
Well, people die in wars...and even boys our age will die.
