The Couple

Sitting together
Yet in their hearts, they could not be further apart.
Their tragedy is double the curse of Hamlet:
The burden on the mind
weighing down on muscle,
Making impulse useless.
In the eyes of others
They are meant to be together.
Born on the same day,
the same stars.
Two so much alike in character,
Strangely so far apart.
They sit expressionless like nothing ever happened between them,
Silently bitter and regretful of moments of truth expressed
Which now feel like times of foolish misjudgements.
Running around in slow circles,
temperamental on one side now and again.
And even though whispers have led them to know each others' feelings
Nothing is done;
Both settled down with the lack of responsibility.
Still they sit,
Unknowing soul mates side by side,
Delaying their actions, biding the time
That they have so little of.
Both desperately hoping something of the other;
They will always be friends;
Forever-idle lovers.
