When you look out of Harry's window, across the broad, you can see into the kitchen of the same floor of E-block on the right hand side of you. At the window of the concrete ziggurat that, however much Harry manages to praise, I can never see the beauty of, stands a Chinese girl, throwing bread onto the stepped roof below her and watching the seagulls wheeling down to snatch at it. She throws the pieces ever closer to the embrasure, trying to entice the vicious birds to her. The sliding plate-glass window is half closed against the February wind and sleet. Unprotected, unadvised, the young foreign girl invites the greedy birds and biting cold to enter at her window.
