It's behind you

At school my friend told me today
'You are perfect in every way.'
I laughed - was this some kind of joke?
I searched for some obscuring smoke.
Perhaps she was just being kind.
Or was she really deaf and blind?
'No I'm not,' I disagreed.
But still she continued to plead.
It seemed like we were saying lines
Taken from a pantomime.
'Oh yes you are!' 'Oh no I'm not!'
Soon I forgot exactly what
We had been arguing about.
Then from somewhere I heard a shout:
'It's behind you!'
I turned, half expecting to see
Empty space in front of me.
Then I'd turn again to air
With high shrieks of 'It's there! It's there!'
But it had not tried to hide
Nor shuffle slyly to the side.
This villain did not play along.
It stood and got its lines all wrong.
I prompted it with careful tact
But this monster just would not act.
Villain defeated by hero -
That is how the stories go.
But this villain would not pretend
Despite my signs it was the end.
'Who's the baddy?' a small child asked
For this character was masked.
Amongst the hissing boos and cries
I looked into the creature's eyes.
Shining, flashing, evil eyes
Of a green I recognised.
I stepped forward, I had to see.
I raised the mask, and there was me.
All through the act I'd really known
Those evil, green eyes were my own.
So just remember it is true
When they say 'It's behind you!'
