"The Weekend Warrior"
I never was a fighting man
Until they threw me in the sand,
Took away my shirt, jeans, and shoes,
And made me wear tan BDUs.
They handed me an M16
With chamber oily and barrel clean,
And said to shut my young right eye
So I may live and others may die.
My squad left camp one midnight black
My sergeant said how we'd attack.
"Green team lay down a wall of lead
Until we know that most are dead"
Then red team leader blushed and said,
"We'll shoot the others in the head."
The mission happened just like that
'Cept Johnny and Matthew were shot in the back.
Sergeant and Scotty died quickly too
Of burns and cuts and internal wounds.
But most the men suffered longer in pain
Dying from misdirected steel rain.
After the fight three men were alive
A raghead, myself, and Mikey survived
But the fires of fighting turned our two hearts cold,
While I was crying, anger in Mikey took hold.
Then one second later there stood just us two
To tell our nation the story we knew.
P.S.
Six months later Mikey died
He opened his mouth and stuck a revolver inside.
