Head shaved

I got my head shaved,
the barbers eyes full of glee when I said it.
Locks of hair falling like autumn leaves,
covering the floor,
a carpet.
When I looked in the mirror
I saw my face like I hadn’t for years.
Years added and somehow removed at
the same time.
When I got back home
she wasn’t sure.
‘It’s not as bad as I thought’
Were her words. She walked around me,
inspecting like a new car.
‘Would you like to kick my tyres?’, I said.
She smiled.
Some people said,
‘Well, it will grow back’
and they aren’t wrong (I hope),
But whether it does or doesn’t,
I’ve left something on that floor
in the local barber shop.
I’ve also found something new.
And it really feels nice to run my fingers through.

I keep mine in a low taper
I keep mine in a low taper cut which is a helluva lot more leisurely than when I kept it high and tight while active duty, guess I have become somewhat civvie-lized. Appreciate the read.

New era
Contrary to what many men believe, women find men with no hair attractive. Ben Kingsley, Patrick Stewart, Yul Brynner, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham. Showing my age a bit here, but you get my drift.
Lovely piece with gentle humour. Well done you. Start of a new era.

I think it suits some men
I think it suits some men better than others, Kat. I'm clean-shaven on my driving licence. It looks like a police mugshot. My ex much preferred me with hair. One of the reasons she's my ex...

Fair enough Harry, I was just
Fair enough Harry, I was just trying to give Sam some encouragement.
Passport/driving licence photos don't flatter anyone. It's the rules. No glasses, no smiling, stare straight ahead. You've got to be really good looking to not come across as a convict.

Haha! No, you're right. I can
Haha! No, you're right. I can't imagine Yul Brynner, etc, with hair. Mark Strong is another one. Telly Savalas, too - though he had hair in his younger days, and looked really odd with it. Women, too. Sinead O'Connor always looked fantastic to me.

I used to have my hair long -
I used to have my hair long - including in a ponytail for a while. But then one day I decided on a Grade 1! Never looked back! Mind you, I do now have a short Mohawk. So much easier to maintain. And I don't have so much grey as I used to.
"Would you like to kick my tyres?" I said.' Laughed out loud at that!
