Remember when you were in high school ? It's 2:30 in the afternoon
and you are in seventh
Period social studies class. Your attention strays as you look out the
window and start to daydream. You imagine yourself traveling to and
exploring all those magical places that are just dots on a map in your
history book.
Well, that's exactly what Susan Foss did back in 1980 when she turned
her daydreams into reality. Susan quit her cushy job as an Executive
Secretary for a major computer company, packed up her 1978 Honda 750
motorcycle, and drove off in search of those faraway places.
Susan traveled the backroads of America for 15 years camping out in our
National Parks, absorbing the beautiful landscape, and meeting people
from all walks of life.
She has been to the top of the Rocky Mountains, cruised through the
Sierra Nevadas, swam in the Pacific Ocean, seen the giant Saguaro
cactus of Arizona, curled her toes in the extra fine sand of the Gulf
of Mexico, and experienced the bitter cold winters of Montana. Her
trips include those from Boston to San Diego, Tucson to New York,
Montana to Texas, Oklahoma to Alaska, Salt Lake City to Reno, and many
more. Along the way she has met many kind and generous people who have
helped her without being asked and required nothing in return.
Susan has also become an accomplished outdoors woman learning to hunt,
fish, and survive in the wilderness on the barest of necessities. She
spent a few months living in an Idaho log cabin without indoor
plumbing, running water, or electricity and loved it. She also spent a
week on an uninhabited island in Ontario, Canada with only her dog
Comanche and the wildlife to keep her company.
To support her wanderlust, she piloted 18-wheelers coast-to-coast, cut
down giant cottonwood trees as a lumberjack, and operated heavy
equipment on a Montana Beet Farm.
Susan kept journals of her adventurous travels and amazing encounters
which she has crafted into a series of books called
Road Magic. These books recount the fun, fear, loneliness, and loves of
a young woman in her 20's and 30's living on the open road. This slice
of Americana should not be missed. Road Magic is about becoming one
with the United States of America, its Landscape, its People, its
Magic!
Road Magic guides and inspires you to take your own cross-country
treks.
