The Old House
The rain was pouring down. The wind was whistling across the moor.
Several hours had passed since we left our camp site. There was no
doubt that we were lost in a storm. I t was then, in the distance, we
saw the old house through the rain. We hurried towards it.
When we got there we could see no windows. There was no bell, just a
brass door knocker. I knocked on the door but nobody answered. I pushed
the old door and it opened with a creak. I went in first, followed by
my sister Sarah. She is one year younger than me. She has brown hair
and blue eyes, just like me. When we entered it was as black as coal,
but I could just make out some stairs.
"John", cried my sister, "can you see a light switch?"
"I think so, there is something here", I replied.
Just before I turned the switch on there was a great bang and the door
slammed shut.
It was the right switch for the light but the door stayed shut, even
when we tried to ram it.
In the end, as we could not get out, we decided to look around. We
started to go up stairs; but that was not to be. As we reached the
third step we fell through into the basement. We seemed to be in a wet,
dark store room. It was Sarah who spotted the steps. They led into a
kitchen. There was no food - not even a crumb - but there were lots of
spiders and cobwebs. There was a door to a living room and one into the
hall where the stairs were. We went back into the hall and started
climbing the stairs again. This time we made it to the top.
There were five doors. We went into the first on our right; it was a
bedroom. Sarah went straight to a bowl.
"Hey! John! Look at this", she called. It was a silver locket with a
picture of a girl in it.
I snatched it and put it in my pocket. I don't know why. Yes I do, it
looked just like Sarah, but older. We left the room through a door at
the far end of the room. Sitting on a chair was the ghost of a girl -
the same one whose picture was in the locket.
We both legged it down the stairs, but the ghost was too fast. She
cornered us at the door and disappeared into Sarah's body. I blacked
out.
The next thing I remembered was back at the camp site with my
disbelieving father asking me about my adventure.
"It's true", I said, "How do you explain this locket", and I pulled it
from my pocket.
"I can't explain that", said Dad.
I looked at Sarah and saw that her eyes were the colour of blood.
"Can I have my locket back", she asked sweetly.
