They tried, we tried, we did
But nothing on earth can save you
Nothing can prevent the inevitable
We are mere mortals, indeed
I’d like to think you are all in a nice place
Where you feast and drink
No more tube feeding
No oxygen masks to cover your face
No bitter pill to swallow
No illness chained to your body
No hardship
Nothing but bliss
We stand still and watch
There is nothing else to do
But listen to that all familiar sound
A definite sound of final release
The humming sound of the ECG,
The unmistakable flatline
And the peace you find in silence.
