Weirdest Thing I Have Seen

Not many years ago, when I was still in elementary school (1st - 7th grade), my school arranged some sort of event. It was an evening, and my parents were supposed to pick me up, but they were delayed. So I waited outside. It was close to sunset, and I looked at the horizon, where I saw one massive half circle. It was probably a whole circle, but half of it was under the mountains in the horizon, so I couldn't see it. This was seriously a VERY big circle. I would say 5 of them would be big enough to "surround my 360 view" (meaning 5 placed in a circle around the earth would make a 360 degrees circle). It was some sort of mix between orange and pink. It was sort of glowing too, but it looked more solid, because I could see big craters on it. Real big craters. It was as if I was looking at the moon only a few kilometers away from it, and it was orange/pink.
It started rising, and I could soon see the circle complete, before it quickly moved further away. It even had a shadow on the right side because of the sun:
O
O
Then it started moving down back behind the hills. I quickly called a few friends, and some came, but they only saw the very last remains of the top.
This is seriously the most messed up thing I have seen in my life, and I was not the only one who saw it. I am not delusional.
How can an illusion have craters and details on it?
It almost looked like this:

Except it had pink in it too, and it covered so very much of the horizon at the biggest (almost half). I am not sure how I was able to see BOTH orange and pink in it, but I did. There were no clouds. My parents saw strange flying objects later too, like medium sized glowing circles moving half-quickly over the sky.
Freaky.
