Midnight Caller

The doorbell rang and gave me a fright
It was twelve o'clock - that's twelve at night
I was fast asleep and it took quite a while
To rouse myself and surmount the pile
Of my husband's clothes all over the floor
And make my way to our front door
My heart beat loudly - bad news I was certain
Was waiting for me, other side of the curtain
But when I looked out, the garden was bare
The doorbell had rung, but no-one was there
I went back to bed, relieved but disturbed
My husband snored on, not the least bit perturbed
I tossed and I turned, unable to sleep
I checked on the children - from them not a peep
After some time, I managed a snooze
The morning brought with it the 'I'm tired' blues
But when I fetched in the milk, still in my night clothes
On the doorstep there nestled a single red rose...
