Old Man Said To Me

We do it to ourselves you know the old man said to me.
He was sat out in the garden with a cat upon his knee.
He paused then for a moment to stroke the sleek white fur.
The grateful cat repaid him with a therapeutic purr.
I offered him a drink, he smiled and shook his head.
With a sigh of pure contentment - he closed his eyes and said.
It won't be long before I go unto my well earned rest.
So listen to me now my son and trust that I know best.
Life's a perilous journey if you're not sure of the way.
Best follow those who've gone before and hark to what they say.
Money, fame and power and the trappings that they bring.
Can never match the wholesome things that make the spirit sing.
Love may bring you sorrow and truth may bring you pain.
But try to live without them and you live your life in vain.
Don't be afraid to suffer - if it's for a worthwhile cause.
There are times when moral weakness can only lead to wars.
If life becomes a burden and it gets too much for you.
Look for God within yourself and He will help you through.
And in your darkest hour - when hopes and dreams are dead.
Remember Christ and Buddha and reflect on what they said.
We do it to ourselves you know - was the message that they
taught.
Greed, desire and selfishness are the enemies to be fought.
Unless they can be conquered and love can win the day.
Your heart will lose the battle and your soul will have to pay.
