Listen to a story about a certain girl, her name was Naomi, she lived in a town. When she was a toddler her mum thought she’s big, put her on a diet, so she wouldn’t eat. She lost some of the weight, but still was quite chubby; her mum never considered this was just her beauty. Naomi grew up to be a lovely girl, smarter than her peers, self - conscious as well. She did well at school though she barely learned, spent most time at home without any friend. The reason Naomi has become so sad was because she always believed she was fat. Whenever she tried to relax a bit her mum would remind her she’s not perfect yet. She told her to cover her face with a fringe because of tall forehead and face that’s too big. Once that girl Naomi wore a skirt to a party, and when her mum saw her said her legs were chunky. Naomi decided she should change the outfit and after she had - thought she’d skip the party. In her teenage years she was very pretty, but really unhappy, wishing she was skinny. All she thought about was her massive chest, counting calories – she hated herself. Finally Naomi addicted to food let the constant cycle affect her good mood. Overeat and vomit, fasting, and the rest, made her lose control and seriously depressed. Her weight fluctuated, which has made her ill; she became obese, but this time for real.
Naomi was 19 – time to leave her home town. She moved to a city and soon got accepted to the University. By the time she started her fresh and new life she was very shy, which has made it hard. She was meeting people and made up her mind that she should be happy whatever the size. She kept dieting still now and again. She kept loosing weight just to get it back. She wanted to stop, but did not know how; magazines and TV did not help her out. Summer holidays she travelled abroad and loved what she saw and she saw a lot. Different shapes on different people who seemed really proud; and did not consider slightly bigger size. Naomi decided she could not go back, and made up her mind to stay in the place.
She moved to the city where people were nice, far away from mum obsessed with her size. She thought that was it, she could now start living; but all she could think of was how much she’s eating. She didn’t know why, though she got so far; the size 0 town kept haunting her down. She let opportunities always pass her by – she spoke to herself “I’m not slim enough”. She kept getting older and had many fears, she was always worried and often in tears. One day she fell pregnant with a baby girl, and than she decided that was time to change. She did really well until certain time - her mum came to visit from size 0 town. Her mum fell in love with baby a lot; but kept on repeating the girl was too fat. Naomi was angry with comments mum’s made, she didn’t want her girl to go through the same.
- Mum please change the topic, this one we’ve been through. Let’s talk about your time here, what you want to do?
- So how is your friend – you know the slim and tall, always in good shape, always in control? Is she still a model? Do You stay in touch? I would love to meet her, but how was she called?
- So what would you say? Oh, yes it was Asia.
- No mum, she’s not fine – died from anorexia!
Naomi decided she will not be angry; all she wanted was to protect her baby; from size 0 madness and size 0 town, that so seriously affected her mum. Every little girl believes in her mum; she made up her mind not to let the size rule over her own and her daughter’s life.
