‘I didnt know that Gary played a violin.’ they thought. Gary hadnt wanted anyone at the school to know, as it could ruin his reputation for grumpiness and sarcasm. The drama teacher had insisted on forcing Gary to express himself. Gary unsuccessfully tried to look unconcerned as he took the violin from its case. His classmates were forced to watch the boy turn white with horror as he lifted up his bow to play.
Everybody hated the sounds that came from Garys violin. It was a particularly cruel instrument for a nervous novice and sounded like it was using its owner to self harm. The din ended. His fellow pupils wanted to fall through the floor with embarrassment but had been blackmailed into clapping. Gary avoided everyones eye contact and wanted to die.
The drama teacher left the lesson full of beans, pleased with her work. She had read in a textbook that a lesson like this could be a life changing event in changing the self esteem of a pupil. She gave herself a McVities biscuit as a reward and hoped that she had paved the way for a future great in classical music.
Tragically, from that day on Gary turned against the truth and beauty of music, eventually going on to own a car showroom.
