It must have come to your attention that by following this logic, it would seem that nature is quite keen on preventing overpopulation, that isn’t that much off the mark in my opinion, as for the reason why nature is doing so, it would only be explained as the following: imagine a scenario where the planet does indeed reach a state where food supplies and commodities In general do not suffice the massive population anymore, many wars would start over food and water supplies, an arms race would occur, and eventually, nuclear warfare will settle down between developed nations. Humans will commit mass cannibalism in certain less developed areas and many diseases will start spreading, causing global pandemics which are even further worsened by the fact that pharmacies and hospitals are going to be short of medical supplies, all of this will make humanity lose a tremendous amount of progress and regress to its initial stages, but, humans will eventually pick themselves up again all the while having learned a valuable lesson that will prevent this from happening once more. Now of course this is only theoretical and as I’ve said before we cannot entirely determine what would really happen in a situation, without knowing all of the factors involved in it, however, the reason why I think humanity will be back on its feet is because humanity or to be more precise, intelligence in general only exists to achieve one grandiose goal which is to make the universe reach a stable continuous state, allow me to elaborate even further on that explanation: it was proven scientifically that if any of the physical constants we know today (such as Planck’s constant for example ) changed by an infinitely small amount, the whole universe wouldn’t have managed to give birth to life, let alone intelligent life forms; studies have shown time and time again that infinitely slight variations in the super force that initiated the big bang before splitting into the weak nuclear force, the strong nuclear force, gravity, and the electromagnetic force, would impact the universe in a way where there could be no life. As stated by physicist Paul Davies, if this super force was slightly weaker than what is known currently, matter wouldn’t be pushed as far and would soon condense into multiple black holes thus preventing all lifeforms from existing, if on the other hand, the force was slightly stronger, then matter would be pushed too far away from other matter which would make the forming of galaxies and proper planets impossible, this denies us the right to exist. It would shock some of you to know that there are even more specific conditions for our universe to be habitable by carbon based life forms, such as the quantities of hydrogen and helium at the start of the universe in addition to the ratios between these elements, this alone however, is not enough to prove that life was meant to exist and to survive, many people believe that it could just be an incredible coincidence or as some scientists like to call it, a cosmic jackpot. When taking the next point into consideration however, things would seem quite different. Our universe is ruled by the Chaos theory (cause-effect law) which scientifically implies that everything can be predetermined if we know all of the initial factors (this is more famously known as Laplace’s Demon), this is more comprehensible if you take the example I’ve mentioned when I first spoke about The Chaos Theory and ask yourself why any of those events occurred, for example, why were you walking down the street at that time? Because you woke up late that morning, and why did you wake up late that morning? Because you didn’t get enough sleep after staying up late to finish an assignment you had , and why did you get that assignment?....etc. We can keep asking those question for a seemingly infinite amount of times once we reach past your birth and your parents’, which leads us to believe that the universe has a deterministic, but unpredictable behavior, This means that everything was determined from the start: if that exact set of circumstances didn’t happen, you wouldn’t be there in the first place, however, if the universe did in fact start the way it did, then the chain reactions would make it so that you would live your life the same exact way that you are living it now, and since as I’ve stated before, there could be no other way for the universe to start, so you would ultimately find yourself on those cross-roads in the end no matter what. This makes the argument that life is merely a coincidence seem less credible, especially if we acknowledge the amount of precision required to create life. We can conclude that life was meant to exist and whichever entity created it, is intelligent and has done so intentionally. When I talk about this creator entity, I am referring to the entity that started the chain reaction that lead to the events of the creation of the universe and life, which is something you should keep in mind to understand the relationship between this point and the previous one. This affirms that we are meant to exist and we are –in every moment- influencing our surroundings in a way that would keep the universe in a stable cyclic state (start-end, Big Bang-Big Crunch), and that we are far too important for the universe for it to just dispose of us in our first stages, which brings us back to our first subject and explains why I think humans will survive overpopulation if it ever was to occur. It should be clear that the last paragraph was scientifically inclined; many scientists do believe and defend this thesis, if you are curious to know more about where this came from, I definitely recommend reading the book A Fórmula de Deus by José Rodrigues dos Santos if you’re interested in learning more about the topic at hand in a more novel-like matter, but just as scientific nonetheless, I think that it was beautifully explained there.
“Do not treat people but in the way you would love to be treated by them.” Is a famous hadith (a citation from the Islamic prophet Muhammed) that I heard for the first time when I was in primary school, and that has been influencing me ever since. If I was to talk about fundamental philosophical thoughts (or the thoughts that can be taken as axioms for my arguments, even though they are obviously less absolute and objective than scientific axioms) then I would definitely say that this is one of the most significant ones. It has always seemed logical to me to never do certain acts when on the giving end that I would hate if I was on the receiving end, this, in my opinion, is a much better motive to do “good” acts when you do not wish to perform them than just wanting to be viewed as a “good” person, in fact, it is the only reason to help someone out besides genuinely wanting to assist them. Moving forward in this trail of thoughts, this logic is far from perfect, you can find a significantly large loophole in it, which is the existence of different preferences and perspectives: what you prefer isn’t necessarily going to be what other people prefer, which is one of the many reasons why people act differently with one another in certain cases; let’s say that you are revising for an exam with your classmates and that you are the kind of person that hates when your classmates are too persistent with their questioning before an exam, this would imply that by this one-standard logic, you wouldn’t want to bother your other colleagues with your questions when you want to verify a certain piece of information, however some of them genuinely do not mind answering as many questions as you want to ask, this is why preferences are sometimes more significant than morality itself; sometimes you would choose to stay near the people that have preferences that work in your favor the most, over the people that are more morally correct in your opinion. Another thing that you should be wary of is that people will not always treat you the same way that you treated them, logically speaking, it would be unreasonable to expect people to behave a certain way when you haven’t explicitly told them to do so from my perspective, (this might seem contradictory to what I said in the previous chapter when viewing this paragraph and the last paragraphs of chapter IV side-by-side, however, if you put the emphasis on the word “explicitly” then it should hopefully clear up the misunderstanding if you can call it that),feel free to distance yourself from the people that fail to acknowledge this after telling them and act in ways that you dislike, if you wish to do so that is. If I was asked to prove why I chose to accept this logic then it would reveal to be a quite difficult task in which my only reasonable argument would be that humans are creatures that prefer equal treatment amongst each other, (which is of course a generalized statement that isn’t completely accurate), therefore, it would only make sense for you to expect a certain treatment if you, yourself, are able to give it first, however I have resigned myself to believing that it simply is a fundamental philosophy that has been ingrained into my brain, and that it cannot be proven entirely with my logic (as a side note here ,it is important to note that I do not believe in absolute proofs when it comes to philosophy).
Another axiom that I take for granted is that you can never judge people for something they no control over, especially things that were determined at birth such as race or gender, however, this did not stop me from judging myself and my past behaviors every time they were brought up to me, as I was simply dismissing those actions as something very “stupid” and disassociating my current self with my past one; some people view that as a sign of maturity and change but for me, it feels more like an inability to come to terms with your past: you are still harboring many regrets that shouldn’t be having, and as I’ve stated early on, having regrets is a very inefficient way of dealing with the past, besides, you shouldn’t feel embarrassed from your past actions, in the contrary you should fully acknowledge them because if you haven’t done those actions and thus successfully avoided those negative consequences, you wouldn’t be able to tell that those actions do not work in your favor nor would you be the person that you are today, even when we do not take that into account, dwelling on “what if’s” isn’t a very useful course of action since you would not be able to make those scenarios a reality, and also because you simply wouldn’t have been able to act otherwise because of the cause and effect law (you had all the factors necessary to act that way). Beyond that, everyone should learn to admit his or her imperfections and be casual about them, your imperfections are nothing to be ashamed of, and if they are too inconvenient for you then you should work on them and try to change them in an efficient way without judging yourself too hard in a very unhelpful manner.
Something that has helped me out a lot over the past few years is to avoid the acts that I do just for the sake of fitting into a category or a stereotype and to think about what benefits me the most, first and foremost. To be able to do that, I had to learn how to control my insecurities and the fear of people’s rejection and opinions, which is something many people struggle with. Fear is an emotion you should definitely not ignore, and what I mean by that is the necessity of controlling it and acknowledging it, I am saying this since many people do not even realize they are afraid of other people’s judgement. You should definitely not be afraid of expressing yourself, disagreeing with someone, or doing something that is appealing to you, even if you get ridiculed by people, that is not enough of a reason for you to abide by their standards, being afraid is something we all go through, how you deal with it however is the issue here, you have to know that the moment you lose your composure, some people will make the best of it to control you even further. This -if done correctly- will significantly impact your life and make you enjoy it much more.
