The 42nd staging of the Senior Olympic Games at Helsinki promised its
usual displays of 'never-say-die' derring-do, and this installment was
said to be chocked full of such surprises-to-be; sadly, the cost was
often high for the contestants' bottomless (a term the press used
advisedly, in this case) desire to beat back Time itself-------of
especial note was the outcome of the Over-75 high jump, wherein
Tjording Fortenbras of Norway, whose clearance of 6'9" both carried the
day and an apparent Olympic and World Record, was disqualified for
having failed to clear said height with the right foot he had,
apparently, planted rather too firmly in the moist turf, leaving it in
a small red pool, oddly, the very color of his smartly coordinated
shorts and tank top, in which he was later interred due to massive loss
of blood, most of which, outside of the aforementioned 'pool', was
smeared haphazardly over the vinyl cushion on which he, sadly,
splattered.
