Man with Dog by J.B. Pravda
Jack and 'Russell' walked perpendicular to the riverbank, the pup
racing toward the water's muddy bank.
Trying to race along, Jack, who had never met anyone named Jill,
nevertheless, fell, breaking his left tibia, strangely enough, the one
with the 'crown' tattoo. As he screamed in momentary agony, 'Russell'
knew what to do: he carefully nudged Jack closer to the mudflat
whereupon he feverishly began to dig.
Russells are diggers, thought Jack whose reaction soon became kneejerk,
observing that 'Russell' had given every indication that he intended to
bury his newfound 'bone'; luckily, an attractive redhead happened by,
one Jill Rosencrantz.
"Are you badly hurt?" she inquired, having rushed to his side, braless
and, well, clothed in such a rustic way that he could
see&;#8230;..everything, which had the salutary effect of
dispatching blood away from his fracture to other irrational but fun
duties.
"Thank God you came along" he muttered.
"I am afraid that your deity is helpless; Mother Earth will heal you"
she assured unblinkingly.
Hours later, Jack was discovered by a woodsman at dusk, buried up to
his waist in the muddy bank; 'Russell' had been enchanted by Jill,
practitioner of Wicca.
