Message Near a Cave by J.B. Pravda
The hunt had been good, all in the loose group of 34 proto-humans had
filled their bellies with fresh meat. Many were lethargic, sleeping
near the constant embers of a fire started two days before; three men
and one woman were decorating the cave's naturally cantilevered
entrance with a variety of drawings. One young boy, off to the side of
the larger group of artists had begun to scrape markings unlike the
others on the cave's smoother surface&;#8230;&;#8230;they were
remarkably straight lines, seeming to form stick-like figurines in
relief.
Orderly in his efforts and appearing to be copying his designs from a
fragment of smooth oblong rock, with four straight edges the others
made their way to his location, puzzled by what they were viewing: they
had never seen anything like it. There were no familiar beasts of prey,
or star formations they had observed through long cloudless
nights&;#8230;..no.
This was different, very different. The smooth rock, cold to the touch,
had strange markings to this effect: &;#9618;
&;#9658;&;#9794;&;#9792;&;#8800;&;#8734;&;#8594;&;#8486;
They soon found the scratchings uninteresting and returned to their
sleeping and animal drawings.
