Greed

He had but a five pound note
crisp, and folded in his pocket
as he walked through
the bright red door
into the bookies.
He started on the slot machines,
the collection of various fruits
spinning in their casing,
and all the time his heart
is racing,
at fifty pence a go
he had to say these were rather,
cheap, a trick infact
to make more people play,
on his penultimate fifty
he struck big,
twenty pounds in pound coins
flowed out of the machine.
Thinking luck was on his side
he stepped it up
moving to higher stakes betting,
it seemed the perfect setting
for a man who was down on his luck,
to suddenly go from nothing
to something all on chance.
It wasn't to be
because after going over
to the cashing in desk
to get some money changed,
he watched the man at the till
count out the hundreds,
one, two, three,
and placed it all Spazzy Macgee
the horse he'd been tipped off about
earlier that day,
but his greed made him pay,
and he was forced to walk away,
with nothing more than a fifty p.
