Story of a Flame
It flickered quietly, softly, that little flame you held.
Even though billows rolled and tempests railed.
Cold rain couldn't quench it, but made it brighter grow;
invading the blackness of this world below.
A strong steady flame that shook not oft;
with inviting warmth in a halo soft.
It never did turn one soul away, but
on through the night gave hope for day.
Your trembling hand never let it fall;
Despite failing strength, still, it stood tall.
And when death's shadow compassed you about,
your little flame would not go out.
And it never shall be, in God's hand now it stays,
and cheers sorrow with mem'ries of long ago days.
Your head on his breast now rests ever so sweet,
not again to think of this life here so fleet.
But the shining example you left us below
accompanied with friendship with you I did know,
will be sufficient, til again we shall meet,
and sit ever together at Jesus' feet.
