A Poem That's Short And Sweet

I want to write a poem
that's short and sweet,
that doesn't necessarily rhyme,
have metre, ring or time.
I'd like it to be beautiful,
To speak of love and flowers,
Enigmas, castles, elephants
And people locked in towers.
Weighty and poignant it should also be
Yet seem as light as air,
Revealing the truth in a few short lines
And making people care.
No room for clich?s or hackneyed versions
Of sunsets, hills and rain;
But something incredibly worthy and new,
A pure musical refrain.
A poem clever that will be taught in schools
And have essays written about.
Feelings transferred from the page
In one fine poetic clout.
But look at this! All couplets and rhyme!
It puts me quite to shame.
A poet I will never be
But I can always try again.
