With a Glance?

Look my way?glance over here?
Just one look into your eyes
Is all I ask, to feel their beauty infuse
And invigorate my anticipating soul.
You look at everyone else, all smiles
And glitter, swallowed up in your ego.
False laughter rings off the walls like a
Thousand pealing church bells.
None of them sound holy to me.
Turn my way, oh please, look to me!
Peel off your mask, show me your true self,
The only windows through the thick theater
Paint that masks the insecurity underneath.
A few more steps, a couple more handshakes,
Many more smiles concealing clenched teeth,
With ears gone deaf to the sounds of frantic shrieks
And a visage mirroring a million flashbulbs?
You pause.
And you look at me.
I am silent.
No sound escapes my lips.
My wandering eyes take in
The story behind your gaze.
Crystal blue in hue, with sparkling clarity?
They sparkle and wink at me, and then?
They vanish. You are gone.
I will never see you that close again.
But with one gaze I saw the real you?
The you beyond the magazine photos,
The countless autographs, and
The million screaming fans.
I turn away. I have seen beyond the glamour,
The glitz, the sequins and feathers,
The strutting peacocks of your world.
And I am sorry for you.
Expecting rapture,
Sensing glorious ecstasy and
Overflowing excitement,
I only see sadness in your gaze.
I feel pity.
Nothing more.
