Hesitant Steps

Lying in the dark
Unable to sleep
Eyes attuned to the minimal light
Warm fuzz coating all I see in blue-grey dust
Outside I hear stuff
Coughs and movements
Shuffles and trips
The clicks of things settling
The soft hiss of the wind
Round my bedroom door leaks streetlight
Static, it clings to my dressing gown
Unmoved by anything
Its fever yellow light stagnant
I sit up
Light a candle
It glows like a yolk surrounded by warm buttery white
It casts no sharp shadows
All it lights softened by its random stillness
I am so awake
Listening to my heart
Waiting for you
