Taking Grandma Home
"Nearly there now," said Grandma
As she always did as I pushed through the mud.
"Garden needs some work," she joked
As she always did as I pushed through the weeds.
"At least I know the neighbours," she remarked
As she read the names on the stones that we passed.
"Here at last," she would say to me;
"I hope you've got the kettle on in there," she would say to
Grandad.
I often wondered if she meant it,
Or was it just to console me?
She always coped with her age,
Her diseases, her infirmities better than I did.
We both knew she was dying but she said she was going home.
I just thought she was dying.
After she went home, I carried on pushing the chair.
It was a habit I felt comfortable with.
And even though I knew better,
I always asked if the kettle was on.
