Lying Toad
"Take me to your chambers" he had said,
The price for bringing back my golden ball.
Against my soft white hand his green skin; gulping,
I took him to my father's royal hall.
"Feed me from you plate" he then demanded.
My father made me keep the oath I made.
Sat upon my plate where bread should be,
He swallowed cake; drank wine of every shade.
"Shtake me t'your bed" he slurred his orders
Lamp in shuddering hand we made our way.
Eyes shut, and sheets pulled far above my head,
He hopped up to the pillow where I lay.
"Kiss me now - I'm sober". Then the promise,
"I'll change into a prince." So with a pout
I puckered up and kissed him. Nothing happened.
He lied! I grabbed his legs and threw him out.
I've married now. With consort I am queen.
Revenge is mine, and now all dues are paid.
Insecticide is poured into the rivers,
And every Christmas Eve the ponds are drained.
