Ocarina
She wore an Ocarina round her neck and she was beautiful.
Her arrival was unexpected and at first I had thought it fortuitous;
chance had dealt me a card and that card was luck. In retrospect my
initial feelings were wholly incorrect. Although to this day I am
unsure as to why she came to me, I am now certain that it was part of
my destiny - that fate and fortune had conspired to change my life
forever.
To begin with she would not show herself to me but I knew she was
there. I could sense her, I could feel her presence all around, as if a
warm and pleasant spirit had been sent to watch over me. I had yet to
lay eyes on her but my desire to be with her was already strong. I was
fully aware of the absurdity of the situation. However, even back then,
I think I was in love with her.
I waited for her to appear with an anxious excitement, like a child
full of expectation on Christmas Eve; a thrilling anticipation of a
momentous visit coupled with the constant fear that the visitor in
question may fail to appear. But my fears were misplaced, I did not
have long to wait.
When she appeared before me it seemed as though she had descended from
some heavenly realm bringing with her a celestial radiance that at once
soothed my mind and enthralled my heart.
Her physical beauty immediately captivated me. The copper-flame of her
hair ignited the air around her, as though sparking passion into the
lives of those she passed. Her eyes were utterly divine - brilliant
blue in colour they glistened like the inviting waters of a tropical
paradise. They were unique and mysterious, a kind of cerulean myth. It
was more than the vibrancy of colour that fascinated me. There was an
intrinsic quality that reached out to me, drawing me forever closer to
them. I could see a superlative wisdom, a beautiful intelligence in her
eyes. There was an esoteric benevolence and kindness of spirit that
shone through them from somewhere deep within her. Those eyes enabled
more than sight. They connected our very being together, a unifying
bond that sent my mind into a spin and my heart into a frenzy.
Her skin was dichromatic, lily-white gently merged with skin softly
sunned, which resulted in an overall glowing complexion, both pristine
and erotic. It was so smooth and soft to touch, her flash felt alive
against mine, caressing me all over with the warmth of a mother and the
eagerness of a lover.
She took me on a voyage West, as if through space and time, to a place
of worship and spiritual importance. There, upon an ancient tor, her
eyes - provocative and alluring - met mine. She took my hand and
smiled. This smile was as bright as the daystar itself, encircling me
with warmth that made me feel safe, complete and loved. I closed my
eyes and revelled in my happiness.
She let go of my hand and as she drifted away from me I opened my eyes.
My senses were instantly overwhelmed. There was a silent explosion of
light. A profusion of colours began to cascade down from the sky. It
was as if I had entered the mind of Claude Monet or Auguste Renoir, a
world so vivid that only a genius of colour and light could have
created it. It seemed as though we were surrounded by the very essence
of nature itself.
The purity of the water, which fell from the most delightful of
waterfalls into a slow-bending river, was coloured gently by the
reflection of the cloudless sky above - the long stretch of cobalt blue
was interspersed with the intense colours - golds, greens, yellows and
reds, oranges, purples and pinks - of the fanciful birds that danced in
the sky to the happy music of their songs, which were sung in full
voice and with ease.
Beneath these richly decorated birds, trees, young and old, were
abundant. Their wooden arms were entwined together in a show of love
and unity. Life pulsed through these magnificent plants, their verdant
leaves the background to splashes of red as squirrels joyously chased
one another along the branches.
Wild and noble horses gently sipped at the water's edge, nodding to
each other their agreement that life was indeed pleasant. Their long
manes flowed majestically in the light breeze while all around young
lambs playfully leapt to and fro, responding to the birds above with
songs of their own.
It was a scene of shared tranquillity and profound beauty - an
enchantment of the heart. And central to this beauty was the radiant
figure that rested close-by the river's edge.
She was sat amongst an extraordinary collection of flowers. The air was
redolent with sweet fragrances and as I neared this wondrous creature I
was overcome with the exotic perfumes from the many flowers, among
them, mysterious eglantine, pungent jasmine, softly-scented violets and
the delicate aroma of a fading musk rose.
As I savoured the various scents I turned my eyes towards the beautiful
being and gasped. A vast flood of colours seemed to flow from her
infusing with the different flowers - blue-bells and forget-me-nots
reflected the delicate beauty of her eyes; snowdrops and softly-peached
orchids were an extension of her skin and red roses, the same as her
hair, grouped happily together and surrounded a singular and
magnificent white rose, a symbol of the purity she held within.
We lay together feeling each other and touching each other until we had
joined completely in a union that left me breathless and astonished. I
had never before experienced pleasure on this scale before - she was
showing me an absolute truth - the truth of love itself! As the
pleasure heightened I caught her smile and for a moment or for eternity
the world went quiet and still.
Everything melted together - the vibrant colours, the exquisite
perfumes and the harmonious sounds all blended together and faded.
Beauty, Truth and Knowledge became One and that One was Her.
My heart pulsed with inspired joy, I wanted to sing out loud -
O wondrous creature!
Who touches my soul so
Stay forever with me
For I am blessed with the touch of the Seraph!
I lay there blissfully unable to move, my mind and body united in
peace, blessed with a serenity that I had never before experienced. She
rose in front of me resplendent in her nakedness. Her eyes began to
sparkle brighter than before. I was completely mesmerised - it was as
though they were the source of all creation.
She continued to look at me as she slowly raised the ocarina to her
mouth. I was breathless with anticipation. My heart raced like it had
never before and it was then, as I awaited this glorious moment, that I
committed myself to her forever.
And then the music began.
The dismal tone completely shattered my peace. My breath left me as the
terrible and horrific din forced the air from my lungs and my head
exploded in pain as the blood began to trickle from my ears. The tune
cracked like thunder as the sky turned black and a torrent of ash fell
like rain as my world was turned to charcoal grey.
She stared at me and smiled her hideous smile. The music continued,
each note duller than the one before. Her mournful song cloaked me and
clung to me like the coldest of winds which brought a chill to my
bones. As I was frozen to the spot I was pulled inside out as my
protests for mercy were drowned in the unbearable noise.
Death and decay had enetered the world and robbed all life from it. I
was left in the darkness, unable to see, surrounded only by the hellish
clamour. I began to disintegrate as all around me dissolved and I
screamed myself into unconsciousness.
And I awoke in the knowledge that she had gone, had left me for good.
But I was still alone in the darkness, could see no way out.
And here I am in the darkness still, though many seasons have passed.
Trapped and unable to see, with nothing but a burden greater than that
of Sisyphus. For within the darkness I have only one thing, the one
thing that she has left me with.
A single memory.
She wore an ocarina round her neck and she was beautiful.
