Search for Star

"BOOM!" I heard a tree crash far away. I prayed that Star was OK.
Star was my Yorkshire terrier and he'd gone missing.
"Becky!" my mom called "We can't look for him now the storm's coming
closer!"
"But mom!" I protested "He's so tiny he'll get lost out there in the
woods. Why'd we have to go camping today? It's too cold anyway I told
you we should've waited till summer!"
Mom wasn't paying any attention to me.
"Here's the car." She shouted, "Climb in!"
I climbed in screaming in protest all the way. Mom started the car and
pulled away. The whole way to the house I screamed and cried.
"We've got to turn around!" I yelled "We can't just leave him there!"
Finally we reached the house.
"Want some dinner?" said Mom sympathetically.
"NO!" I yelled and ran off to my room.
I lay in my bed and cried for Star. As I drifted off to sleep lulled
by my tears I thought of Star and wondered what he must be thinking of
now.
**************************************"BOOM!" a tree crashed in the
distance. I ran through the woods. Where was Becky? She had told me to
fetch- she had- I was still holding the stick. Then when I returned to
where she'd been she was gone. Her mother was too! Where WAS Becky? I
barked loudly hoping maybe Becky would hear me. I was frantic now. I
ran back and forth, in circles, and around a tree. I ran until the sun
was setting. Finally I decided I had to find a place to sleep. I
crawled into a tree hole and curled up. I lay awake for hours thinking
of Becky. Then finally when all the light was gone from the sky I fell
asleep.

I woke up to my mom's yells of, "Becky, BECKY! Wake up, Cynthia's
here!"
"Wha? Huh? What's happening?" I yelled. I heard giggles from
downstairs.
"Cynthia?" I said.
"Yep!" she yelled.
Cynthia was my best friend and quite well - giggly. Whenever we were
together we were always laughing and being silly. But I wasn't in the
mood for silliness now. I buried myself deeper in my covers. I heard
footsteps on the stairs. It was Cynthia.
She came up and sat next to me without saying a word. We sat there for
what seemed like hours. Finally Cynthia stared at me for a second. Then
she held out her arms. I collapsed into them.
"I miss him," I cried.
"He'll be okay," said Cynthia. "He's probably having a grand old time
making friends with the birds and the squirrels and the deer."
Suddenly a picture came into my mind of Star with some birds and
squirrels on his back accompanied by a deer. I tried not to laugh but I
couldn't help myself. The giggle just burst out.
"Yeah and the bears too" I said sarcastically. Suddenly I realized what
I had just said.
"Oh my gosh!" I said "There's bears in the woods, and lions and tigers
and wolves and coyotes and oh poor Star!"
I cried into Becky's shoulder and wondered where Star was and if he was
still even alive.

I woke up to a chorus of birds. I crawled out of my tree and saw the
storm had passed.
Who's the new guy?" I heard a voice from below me. It sounded all
croaky. I looked. It was a frog.
"Who knows" said a bird, "You can never tell with this tree. We wake up
yesterday- Gary's gone. We wake up today- his home's filled with this
guy!"
I looked up at the bird. He was a cardinal bright red and muscular. I
looked down ashamed at my tiny body.
"Don't worry dear." I jumped at the sound of yet another unknown
voice. I looked up to see an old female sparrow. She looked down at me
lovingly. "We won't harm you. Just tell us how you came to be here in
this old tree. If I'm not mistaken you're a dog and dogs belong in the
city not out here."
"Do you know how to get back to the city?" I asked suddenly excited.
Maybe I could get home after all.
"No" said the sparrow "but I think I know someone who does. "
I happily recounted my story to the birds. Perhaps I would be going
home after all.
**************************************
"Don't worry Becky." Said Cynthia; "You know why I came over?"
"Why", I sobbed.
"Cause we. And your mom of course are gonna go look for Star."
"Really?" I asked.
"Really, really" she said. I laughed, as that was a line from Shrek our
favorite movie of all time.
"Come on," said Cynthia.
Reluctantly I got dressed and me and Cynthia headed downstairs.
"Finally" Mom said.
We squished into my mom's tiny car and headed off to the woods. I
chatted happily with Cynthia. Maybe I would find Star after all.

I bent down to let the sparrow whose name I had discovered was Kira
climb onto my back. We were going to visit old owl to find out how to
get me back to the city. We walked and walked and then suddenly as if
by magic a tree was there. A big old, bent and snarled trees but a tree
none the less. In the tree was an old, old owl. I explained my problem.
The owl thought for what seemed like hours. "I regret having to tell
you this." He finally said. "But I don't think you need the answer to
that problem right now." Not need the answer? Of course I needed the
answer. I NEEDED to find Becky. I began to protest but Kira tugged on
my fur and pulled me away. I lay on the ground with no hope left. That
had been my only change of finding Becky. I wondered where she was now
and fell into a restless sleep.
**************************************"STAR! STAR" I yelled for what
seemed like the thousandth time.
**************************************
It was NOT the thousandth time. Old Owl says he only heard you start to
yell a few seconds ago.
**************************************
I said it SEEMED like the thousandth time.
**************************************
Well anyway. I was laying down hopelessly when suddenly I heard cries
of, "STAR! STAR!" I thought it was a dream but Becky had come for me. I
ran for her.
**************************************
And I ran for him. I picked him up and we hugged for what seemed like
hours. I was so happy I could barely breath.
**************************************
Stop all the mushy stuff. End a story the PROPER way.
**************************************
And what's that?
**************************************
And they all lived happily ever after.
