DAY ONE
This consisted of nothing more than a bottle of wine and a glass of
sherry.
I sat in my deckchair and stared lovingly at the navy blue sky with the
twinkling stars.
I heard footsteps, crunch, crunch, over the gravel. The feet belonged to
Katie. Katie was my little sisters friends big sister. And she was my
best friend. Katie was still in her twentys whereas I'm approaching 34.
I was on holiday in Cortona, Italy, with my 3 children, Katie and her
boyfriend, Terry. Myra, Tilly and Mitchell were all in bed as it was
nearly midnight. The cresent moon shone out and reflected onto the
pool. "Happy?" I asked just staring at the pool. "Yeah," Katie said in
a quiet whisper.
DAY TWO
Today we are going to the centre of Cortona. A quiet town with little
residents. I was wearing my short dress with my bobbed ginger hair back
in a stylish pony tail. But I looked nothing compared to Katie. Her
blonde hair reached her waist and she wore a boobtube with a cropped
belly. Her shorts, well, the were so tiny her short jacket concealed
them! Myra, Tilly and Mitchell all clambered into my Clio while Katie
and Terry led the way in their sports car. In Cortona we wandered about
the empty streets, surprised at the ancientness of the town. A family
passed by, Italian. It was a family of five. The lady was holding the
two girls hand and the man held the younger boy and the shopping. Myra
looked up at me, "Mammy," she asked her big brown eyes looking into
mine.
"Yes," I said not really paying attention.
"Where's our Daddy?" I froze. None of the kids had ever asked that
before. None. "Well, When Mitchell was born Daddy, em, found out that
he was, he was ill. Very poorly. And then about 3 months later Daddy
went up to see God." I felt a tear trickle down my face. Katie was
frozen still too. It was like Myra and myself were the only two moving.
"Where is he now though?" Myra quired Katie finally moved. "Come along
now," And Katie pushed Myra long. I was the one that was frozen now. I
just stared at one cobble hearing the world get on with their lives.
And hearing my children silent. No laughing and teasing with their dad.
I must get a husband. But no- one can be as good as Keiron. Well, he's
dead now. It was that flipping cancer that popped his cloggs for him.
It's just not fair!!!
DAY THREE
Reading back, I sound like a child. I sound selfish at a brute. Stupid
me!!
Today at the bread shop, I was buying a pizza and some flat bread when
I saw the cutest guy! His name was Nick. And he gave me his number. He
had brownish hair with kind of blonde highlights. He wore this kind of
shirt. A baggy one with SEXY written across the front. So I went over
to him, and whispered, "I know you are!" And as he had just been served
he wrote his number on the reciept. He's English, from Cornwall, he's
got a kid who's disabled and his wife had an affair and they just split
up!
He's coming over tomorrow. I'm going to get a new dress. He's bringing
Michael over. Michael is the disabled child. He's only 5! Hang On!
That's the same age as Mitchell!!!! I love him! I love him! I love
him!
DAY FOUR
Big mistake!!! I found out something dark and deep about Katie. Well,
she used to be married.
Get this!!! To Nick!!!
Terry is the one she had the affair with. Once Katie realised who Nick
was she and Terry went down to Centeral Cortona. Michael, Mitchell,
Myra and Tilly were all asleep. Oh! It was so romantic!!
Katie didn't even know she had a child. And she nearly died when she
found out it was disabled. She was really mean and spitful about it!
Listen to this!!!
"Katie?" Nick said frowning at her.
"Nick!" Katie gasped eyeing up Nick.
"What the hell do you think you are doing?" Nick said angrily and
looked eye brows raised at me,
"Sorry, Nick, I didn't know...We hadn't talked much!" I stammered.
Feeling the tense motion in everyones breath.
"Who's that?" Katie said pointing at Michael.
"Your kid." Nick said so plainly Katie was surprised. I was
surprised.
"What?? I haven't got a kid. Not this one anyway!! I don't want a...
disabled kid!!" Katie screamed and she pulled Terry away from us and
she ran out of the gates. Nick looked at Michael. "That was your
mammy." he said and i could hear the saddness in his voice.
"Nick, Sorry," I apoligised and burrowed my head into his shoulder.
Michael then blurted out, "No! She nasty mammy. You," and he pointed at
me," You mammy!!" And I reached out to cuddle the child. He was so
sweet!!!
"He's not that wrong. You're a brilliant mum!" I smiled and we
kissed.
DAY FIVE
Oh! God! Only two days left. I'm really going to miss Nick. He's an
angel!!
I think he's filled the hole in my heart that's been there ever since
Keiron passed away. I think I love him. He gets on with the kids
perfectly. Just the other day Tilly said to me, "Mammy. Is Nick our new
daddy?" Bless her. I told her. "Would you like Nick to be the new
daddy?" And she answered. "Yeah! You would too. You kiss him like you
used to kiss daddy!" And she's only 7.
She's right. I do fancy him. Infact I hope he fancies me.
I was in my room and he came in and just looked at me. He was just this
gorgeous happy person that made me feel loved and happy too.
Katie and Terry have collected their stuff and went to France. They've
booked a ferry that'll take them to Brittany. Like, on a cruise. Katie
was all edgy around me. Not talking or rubbing her arm when I brushed
against her.
I've decided. Maybe she's just there to fill space. Well, as far as I'm
concerned, she can fill the space somewhere else.
I feel really happy now. Really content.
DAY SIX
Oh! God! Today is the penultimet day on this life changing
holiday.
The children, Nick and I all went to a nearby water park. It was really
good fun. Nick has the best six-pack any one would want. All these
teenagers were chatting him up. But he's mine. He just chatted to them.
Y'know like a friend. When we went on the Jumbo Jet. The slide. Nick
held my hand tightly and whispered encouraging words to me. I really
loved it. Michael went on this rubber, bendy seat that the park
provided. It was only 1 euro and to buy it 2! So we bought it. It would
come in handy for when Michael went to other water parks. After the
water park we went to this resteraunt over looking the very Centre of
Cortona. An outside covered balcony. With the most gorgeous food ever
imaginable. The interior was beautiful too. It had mosaic walls and
floors and there was this whole room where even the windows we made
from see-through mosaics. I loved it!!
DAY SEVEN
The last day. The best day of the whole holiday. I'm going home an
engaged woman! Nick asked me to marry him this morning over a breckfast
of cereal. Not the most romantic but it was the best day still. Nick
researched on the computer and found this lovely house right by the
sea. In Cornwall. I really am looking forward to it. We're going home
to Durham first to say bye to my family and get my stuff. Nick has sold
his house. And we've got a couple of hundered thousand to decorate.
When I rang and told Katie she just hung up with out saying a
word.
On the plane home Nick fell asleep. "I love you Charlotte Finicult. So
which is it? Finicult or Nouse?"
BACK HOME
My family was so pleased. I am too. I am now called Charlotte Nouse and
I feel a free woman again!
