Under that tree

It's that one, there
That's the tree we lay under, years ago
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;on a hot day
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;we were sweating inside and out
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;clinging to our clothes
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;ourselves
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;each other
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;to the grass
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;as if the park was the back of a running dog
When you wanted to tell me - remember?
About him, but couldn't
We cried but I didn't know why
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;for hours
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;there was nothing else to do
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;soporific, suffocating
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;summer traffic
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;hooted and shone in the distance
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;boy racers' radios thumped like my head
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;things bit us
&;nbsp;&;nbsp;our salty faces, legs
It's a cold night
I can see the tree now
Dripping darkness from a street lamp.
