We liked all the same things.

We liked all the same things, remember?
Back then, when I called after school
We'd stroll into town in our trainers
In some vain attempt to look cool.
We'd often sit round in your bedroom
And chat while I nuzzled your hair.
We'd dream to the same classic albums
(And listen for feet on the stairs!)
We laughed at the same things, remember?
That "stripshow" you did for a bet?
How, tears in your eyes, you stood laughing
While I choked on that first cigarette?
That party at Grant's, you recall it?
That one where we sneaked out of sight -
Returned looking flushed and embarrassed.
We'd both become adults that night.
We wanted the same things, remember?
Commitment, fidelity, truth.
We knew what we'd have, for we planned it
With all the bright fervour of youth.
We chatted for hours of our future,
The people, the places we'd see
We'd backpack the world on a shoestring
Do everything - just you and me.
We needed the same things, remember?
But when he strolled into your life,
You sat fascinated, and listened,
Your laugh slashed my heart like a knife.
And then, on the black fateful evening
That wiped away all that we'd planned
You rose, turned away and just followed,
Looked back, and let go of my hand..
We wrote of the same things, remember?
Our love, and of how it would last.
I couldn't believe the thin letter
That spoke of your future, my past.
I threw it away, your last message
Still screwed up and crumpled in rage.
But later that night I retrieved it,
To relive each sad, precious page.
We cried at the same things, remember?
The films? I remember them still.
But none caused more tears than that letter:
I don't believe anything will.
I'd thought that we needed each other
But clearly that just wasn't true -
I see what you craved was excitement.
I saw all I wanted in you..
