At the time, it was fresh gossip,
Coiffeured ladies sat in the Clerkenwell tea-rooms
Whispering excitedly in their East-End voices,
Embroidering the story carefully, to make it more interesting.
Now their chatter is as dead as the soldiers, And Edward, just another
name in the stone, meaning nothing to visitors.
