When the phone rang

When the phone rang.
I watched her dress in silence; not a word was spoken,
The devil in me spat bile as I clawed the arm of my chair,
In bra and pants, she silently ironed the damp t-shirt dry,
Once more me jealous temper stirred, me wrath awoken,
Gave me neither word nor glance: away with no goodbye,
The tatty draylon cover scratched to the foam laid bare.
When the phone rang, she came back in. I'd my stereo on,
The lyrics said all I'd have want them to: 'I wanted you',
Over and over. It's over. It's over is it? Is it over?
I wanted you. It's over? You said it were never on.
If it's over, how come? If we weren't never lovers,
So you lied either way- 'cos both o' them can't be true,
She cried a bit, I saw her- watched her standing weeping,
Knew why it was: Couldn't think of an answer could she?
Her own fault- shouldn't do it. Should show me respect,
I know her inner thoughts, dreams while she lies sleeping,
Alone we're half a person each. United we're perfect,
Tried and tried to make her see, wouldn't see it would she?
I asked her what she was wearing, seeing what she'd say.
Silence bar the whimpering. 'Well?' I said and waited- pause,
She inhaled with hic and sob and told me: baggy jumper,
Made her look fat she said, but I weren't born yesterday.
Said I saw her before, lying whore, and that I'd thump her,
Told her what she were really wearing- jaw dropped of course.
When the phone rang she came back in I'd me stereo on,
She's careful; scared but excited like she knew it were me,
I wanted you. She knows it's true but she killed our love,
I wanted you, it's true but what you did were wrong.
You denied it, lied and stuff. When we were hand in glove,
Said you didn't know me just 'cos you've never met me.
Stop it. Leave me alone. You're messing with my mind,
Phone goes down and out the door, she'll not be back today.
She'll be at work and then she's out from six this evening
So I shutter the slatted blind that I always hide behind,
Until the next time that I will make her telephone ring.
To listen to the next set of lies that she's got to say.
