When You Walk

I only remember
Two Garfield strips
In one
Garfield lowers himself down on a harness
To steal Jon’s apple pie.
This is classic Garfield,
He’s probably done this a few times

The second one is notable
Because in my big book of Garfield sketches
It’s one of the only ones that didn’t make me laugh

Jon comes up to Garfield and says
Do you walk with your legs pointing inwards
Or with your legs pointing outwards
With left leaning forward steps
Or right leaning forward steps?
Or something like that
What’s important is that it’s baffling

Garfield looks worried
He looks down
Then he looks at Jon
Jon stares motionless
Garfield says:
I’ll never walk again

Like I say, it didn’t make me laugh
But that was eighteen years agao
And I still remember it

Now when I think about walking,
Or legs, or steps, or marching
It brings back that Garfield sketch
And it frustrates me that I don’t know exactly
What it is Jon said
Maybe it was funny,
But at seven I didn’t get it

I try and work it out,
But there is no way of knowing for sure
But I haven’t googled it
Or even looked through my old Garfield books
I don’t care that much.
