Words
What is a word?
But collection of letters that on their own sound absurd?
A gathering of syllables form up in a line,
To make something new, make a meaning sublime.
Alone a word stands, often simple in meaning,
The short and the long, the strong, the demeaning,
It can look small and alone, insignificant and shy,
Or it can loom and oppress, leave you wondering why.
A word can be short and still be emotive,
Its attitude strong, sometimes even explosive.
It can cut to the quick; it can bring on a tear,
But a word on its own is nothing to fear.
A word all alone rarely attacks,
But the tale can be different when they gather in packs.
Grouping in sentences, phrases or worse,
They pair off as couplets to rhyme in a verse!
Allow words to form lines and their context soon changes,
It can even be hard to hold them on pages.
They can be rounded up, trained, if one is able,
Then herded into prose or corralled into fable.
Now meanings become clear, their messages sent.
But they are now non-negotiable. No way to repent.
You may think once tamed, they would stay where their put.
Until you suddenly hear them misquoted from books.
But words can bring beauty, to the right ears,
Make you cry tears of joy, and forget all your fears.
They can bring courage and strength in the right place,
Support those in need and help win the race.
Take three little words, all on their own,
All easily disguised, their true meaning unknown.
But put them together, into a small phrase,
And suddenly their meaning comes out from the haze.
But one word in the centre can make all the change,
Between responses of lust, and those of enrage.
One can produce feelings of joy, hope and cheer,
The other distrust, anger and fear.
So choose your words carefully, of that I implore,
Treat them like friends, both the fun and obscure.
Use them with care and consider their meanings,
And like with your friends consider their feelings.
So go forth and literate, your feelings on fashion,
Write passages of beauty, or even letters of passion.
Pen novels, short stories, poetry and verse,
Although it's unlikely that it will help fill your purse.
If you treat words as your friends, they'll answer in kind.
And help to express what's on your heart or your mind.
One last word of warning, before you write from the heart.
Beware the critiques, for they will tear both apart.
