The Youth of Today
They say the youth of today are uncultured; that we don't know anything
about art, literature, history and other 'classics'. We 'youth of
today' apparently live in a commercial world full or 'junk' and school
doesn't teach us anything anymore. However, I think they are wrong
because they are a bunch of old fuddy-duddies that have nothing better
to do with their time except complain about the weather, the roadworks,
the politicians and the youth of today. Okay, so they might know more
about Beethoven's fifth symphony, Homer's stupid Odyssey or the French
revolution but the chances are they were probably around at the time.
Maybe they do know more about that kind of (very boring) stuff but do
they know what Posh and Beck's youth are called? Do they know who's at
the top of the charts? Could they name all the Teletubbies? I think
not.
I'm not saying here that the Teletubbies are in the same league as
Homer - even if he was born a million years BC - his language was still
above the Teletubbies. What is important though is that what they know
isn't really relevant. You could have a conversation about Beck's new
'fashion statement' - if that's what you call orange nail varnish and a
sarong - you could have a conversation about Britney Spears and her
apparent virgin-role-model status, but somehow I think their aren't
many 'youths of today' who would want to talk about the significance of
some lardy-dar piece of literature with their peers, why? Because it's
down right boring and so Mr and Mrs Fuddy-Duddy can take their
symphonic masterpieces and their stimulating, superficial literature
and shove it up their wrinkly, little a**** because you don't know the
difference between Will and Gareth so - NUR!!
