The 2 Souls of Torment

The window stood motionless, in a careless sort of ‘flung-open’ position. It wasn’t open but not quite shut, this made it different from all other windows. Obviously this subjected it to the malicious name calling associated with all things different.
One day, the window, lets call it Sally, decided it was sick of being between open and shut and so it came to the hasty conclusion that there was only one thing to do, it would wait patiently for something to viciously bang into it and break it…it was the only way. Sally however didn’t think this all the way through, for starters she hadn’t anticipated just how long she would have to wait, or how hard it actually was to shut a window such as herself. Sure she had gotten the odd fly and occasional one-eyed pigeon but nothing quite cured her of her devout loneliness. What she needed was something bigger and better. Once again she began the tedious task of contemplation, this lead to a phase of serious thought which, as we all know can have disastrous effects on suicidal windows, especially ones like Sally.
What happened next? I hear you ask, well my children, what happened next can only be described as a miracle, but if you're not religious, I'm sure you can find many other ways of relating such an event.
High in the sky above the fated window, a rather small dragon (having been set in his ways) continued to fly in a rather small circle, whether this was in any way connected to his size no-one knows. To say his size didn’t bother him would be a lie, in fact he had developed a rather small complex about it. He wasn’t exactly a tiny dragon, he was bigger than a rather small cat lets say, but unfortunately for him he was considerably smaller than other dragons his size. Being so in-between made our rather small dragon rather agitated. Now you see we all know agitation is as bad for dragons as serious thought is for suicidal windows…anything could have happened! In this case it had doomed him to fly in constant circles which dragons generally aren’t meant to do.
One rather windy day when the window was still half open and the dragon was still flying, a rather large gust of wind came and blew the rather small dragon rather off course. Before he knew what was happening, he was no longer flying in a rather small circle but was floating to the ground at a rather vicious speed. Obviously it’s not usual for winds to blow things to the ground but this was no ordinary wind. Yes, I think it was fair to say, a rather fair amount of confusion was in the air, both from the dragon and the wind, perhaps more so from the wind as it had never even seen a dragon before let alone escorted one to the ground.
The dragon, on hitting the ground became very aware the he was no longer flying in a rather small circle, in fact he came to the shocking conclusion that he wasn’t flying at all. As this had never happened to him before he decided to stay still for as long as possible to fully revel in his new ability not to move at all. Never before was he able to witness such an extreme, he had always found himself doing things by halves ‘rather’ this or ‘rather’ that. Never before had he been able to lay claim to such an extreme onset of rebellion.
However he soon found staying so still made him rather sick and all of a sudden his tail started to move in a rather slight circular motion, he found this rather annoying and began to cry.
A rather short distance away Sally could hear what she at first thought was the makings of another upset one-eyed pigeon heading in her direction. Of course the educated among us know it was the dragon but Sally wasn’t educated and didn’t know what a dragon was. The thought of being cured excited Sally tremendously and if she wasn’t a window she may have danced or found some other expression of joy.
When there was still no sign of the pigeon Sally too got upset and began to cry in the only way half flung open windows know how. This dreadful sound was audible to the sobbing, rather small dragon who was finding it increasingly hard to keep still.
‘Hello?’ said the dragon between rather small sobs.
‘Pigeon?’ ventured Sally innocently.
‘Pigeon? Where?’ Replied the dragon rather frantically as he was rather scared of pigeons, in the air they had been his only tormentors however what he didn’t know was that pigeon wasn’t the word for aeroplane as he had first thought. Because Sally didn’t know what an aeroplane was either she couldn’t help him in his confusion.
From this Sally gathered that what she was talking to was not a pigeon and so assumed it to be a bunny rabbit which ironically was what Sally called everything that wasn’t a fly or a one-eyed pigeon and since even Sally knew bunny rabbits couldn’t help her she sighed heavily and went back to her sobbing.
Before he could say anything else, the rather small dragon heard a rather small whirring sound that was somehow rather familiar although he couldn’t put his finger on it. He shrugged it off until he couldn’t ignore it anymore; it gradually got louder and more focused forcing the rather small dragon to look up, on doing so he saw a small object spiralling in rather small fast circles to the ground where he was sat.
As he already had to resist the urge to move, he decided to give in and dodge the object before it landed on him. He scuttled towards the ground underneath Sally in just enough time to see the object crash into the tree he had been under at such speed that it was propelled off and into the window next to Sally. On sliding down the window the object landed on the floor with a rather small ‘pop’. The rather small dragon looked at the object in front of him which was curled up into a ball after its dramatic entrance. After lying still for a while the object began to move and much to the surprise of our dragon uncurled to reveal a rather small head with rather small eyes and rather sharp teeth, next to appear was a rather small tail which uncurled from a rather small red scaly body. Could it be that there was more than one rather small dragon in the world? Before the rather small dragon could say anything, the new arrival opened his mouth to speak: ‘Ahem’ he said retrieving a rather small scroll from under one of his wings, ‘I have been sent as the Royal Servant of Her Majesty Queen Sedgette to find Derek son of Herbert the small. I have orders to return him to his kingdom. I assume you are the aforementioned?’
To this a look of shock was the only reply, he recalled his name indeed to be Derek and his father had indeed been Herbert but what was Royalty wanting him to return for? He managed to utter a vague reply of: ‘Yes I think.’
‘Nice to meet you I'm Bob. You’ve caused quite as stir in the kingdom, no one knew where you were and we wanted to give you the best sized dragon award but no-one could find you, so they sent me’ he said with a big beam on his face.
‘An award for me? Thank you I guess but I can’t seem to remember the way home and every time I try to fly it’s always in circles.’ This was said accompanied by a rather large sigh.
‘Don’t worry about that, I’ll take you back safely, just follow me and we will be back in the Kingdom of Rather in no time.’ At this Bob gathered himself and prepared to take off signalling to Derek to follow him. Derek however wasn’t so sure he knew how and all of a sudden felt rather scared, despite this and his inert fear of encountering a pigeon whilst in the air, they took off together and gathered a rather fast speed until they were unable to be seen from the ground.
That was the last Sally heard of the dragon, she didn’t notice straight away because she had another more pressing problem to deal with. Well not exactly a problem for her as on Bob’s arrival he had banged into the window next to Sally leaving it too in the half flung open position making it very sad and also ridiculed by the other windows, Sally of course knew how to deal with this and they both found in each other what they had wanted, and indeed what every ridiculed window anywhere would look for in their situation…a rather good acquaintance.
